The Idea

The ¡Cultiva! Youth Project goal is to involve diverse youth in organic gardening as a means to teach healthy lifestyle and job skills, increase leadership abilities by serving as role models to young children and broaden their social horizons by interacting with new adults and peers.

The Specifics

¡Cultiva! youth manage a two acre organic garden and 20 bee colonies, learn to grow, prepare and eat nutritious food, and in the process create physical activities for better overall health and enjoyable social interactions. They teach what they have learned to over 700 younger children during the children’s summer camp. The youth market and sell their fresh produce and bee products at the Farmers Market and local retailers and give back to their community by donating a portion of what they grow to those in need and participating in youth implemented community service activities.

Cultiva! provides young people with a connection with the land, a chance to get their hands dirty learning where healthy food comes from, and what to do with the food once they've grown it. These young people will have a brighter future because of these lessons. Cultiva! is a ray of hope!

I was a part of this program in high-school, and can affirm that anything good anyone has to say about it is true, and then some!

I love watching the kids learning about gardening and hearing them talking with the supervisors while I am working on my own small plot. They add to the sense of continuity we all get with gardening. I wish all kids could have this amazing experience.

I agree that Cultiva! does a fabulous job of developing young people's capacity for leadership, earth stewardship and making healthy choices. I have interviewed the youth involved and am so impressed with all they do for the community and each other and their peers!

I live near the gardens and see these young people working hard at all times of the day and in all weather conditions. I also buy their healthy produce at the Farmer's Market. This is a very deserving organization!
