The Climb: Sustainable Rural Transportation

The Idea

Empower rural people and communities to address their transportation needs through collaboration and shared transportation resources to expand economic opportunity, access services, and protect the environment. Protect the global climate system from further harm due to emissions of greenhouse gases.

The Specifics

The Climb primarily operates a regularly scheduled bus service in western Boulder County, Colorado, working with more than 500 households. We provide regularly scheduled service to Boulder County along the Four Mile Canyon, Gold Hill and Ward communities. We also provide special door service for residents with disabilities and special event transportation service to lower the parking and driving congestion for mountain community events. Our mission is to provide sustainable subsidized transportation services and education in the mountain communities to lower the cost and environmental impact of commuting in areas not currently served public transportation service. We would use the money to offset operational expenses and expand services.

The area The Climb serves is in the mountain area west of Boulder, Co. By providing transportation to business workers and school children it eliminates many driving trips and the attendant pollution of our crisp, clean mountain air. It is a valuable service that should be supported.

I don't know what I would have done without the Climb. It's an amazing source of community involvement, it allows neighbors to meet and have a dialogues about their town and the state at-large, and server a really simple necessity: safe, timely, reliable transportation in and out of town. I really really believe in what they're doing. This is so important for the people of Gold Hill, Ward, Boulder and towns like theirs.

We've lived in Gold Hill for nearly 40 years and when this idea got started, it was the best thing that had happened in decades to bring our community together and help solve the distance and cost of driving to Boulder. It also provides a easy access between Gold Hill and Ward, and transportation for students of alternate schools in Boulder. Another thing is that it allows friends and family from the plains to visit our mountain community for a few hours or a day or days, and it provides affordable transportation for so many mountain folk. And the friendly atmosphere of Gold Hill stays with you from town to mountain — mountain to town. Let's keep this invaluable service going strong!
