Upendo Village, NFP supports the Wheaton Franciscan Sisters and Assumption Sisters of Nairobi in bringing love, life, and hope to Kenyans living with HIV/AIDS by providing care and resources that restore and promote dignity, self-esteem, respect and self-sufficiency.
The HIV/AIDS epidemic has been a priority for the Wheaton Franciscan Sisters, who in 2002 began partnering with the Assumption Sisters of Nairobi, to develop Upendo Village, a project designed to respond to the needs of Kenyans (particularly orphans and widows) affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The country is losing an entire generation of adults to AIDS and other causes. Upendo Village, the only such resource in 50 miles, now serves 5,277 clients and the number is rapidly growing (up 37% from last year). Clients are offered testing, counseling, nutrition, medication and basic health care in the clinic and homes. When clients are able, Upendo's programs help them maintain healthy lives and become engaged in self-sustaining micro-business.
