ENGLISH @ WORK. Increasing economic security for immigrants through language one workplace at a time

The Idea

ENGLISH @ WORK is an Austin, Texas based nonprofit that helps immigrants and refugees advance at work by providing customized English language instruction at the workplace. Classes are specific to the workplace and curriculum is customized to students' job descriptions. http://www.englishatwork.org

The Plan

In Central Texas, there are over 8,000 limited English proficient individuals working service jobs. Their limited proficiency puts them at greater risk of getting stuck in minimum wage positions and perpetuating the cycle of poverty for their families. ENGLISH @ WORK helps to increase these individuals economic security (many of whom are immigrants) by giving them the language skills they need to advance at work. Since 2005, we have taught over 750 students at over 30 business sites in Central Texas. Our students make greater proficiency gains in less time and 75 percent of our partner businesses promoted students after they participated in our program. Our impact is clear, but we need your help to reach 400 new students in 2012!
